News & Events
In early July, a Journal Gazette reporter interviewed Javier Mondragon and Zis Milentis on a new aspect of Adopt a Block. A nearly full page news article came out in the Journal Gazette regarding the interview. It announced new steps to move to the next level in the Adopt a Block Program designed to enhance safety in our neighborhood. This new step will be a Home Safety Inventory.
Later that month, as a result of a news release, calls were received from channels 21 (WPTA), 15 (WANE), and 55 (WFFT) for interviews. Appointments were made for all three stations on Tuesday, July 9. Interviews included participation by Javier and Annette Mondragon, Deputy Police Chief Garry Hamilton, John Morgan (Project Leader), Marc Rumpf (Volunteer), Vivian Sarber (Neighborhood Association President), Palermo Galindo (City of FW Neighborhood Liaison), and Zis. All three stations broadcasted a news story that evening.
Mrs. Diane Humphrey, community leader and philanthropist, visited the South Campus to hear about Bridge of Grace. She is a former teacher at Southern Heights Elementary School (Levan A. Scott Academy). Her father, Edward Schaefer, Founder and Co-owner of Franklin Electric Company in Bluffton, Indiana had long supported education. She fully and wholeheartedly endorsed efforts of Bridge of Grace.
Over 300 individuals squeezed in our sanctuary with chairs added and some standing in the hallway from Fellowship Missionary Church and Grace Point’s North and South Campuses. Area churches heard about our concern and battle to curb violence and create a safe neighborhood. They called us to see if they could join us in a brief service and divide into small teams and walk the neighborhood praying. Afterwards was a praise service and testimonies about people met and prayed for along the way.
In August, Michael Packnett, CEO of Parkview Health Systems, visited our campus. This meeting allowed us to introduce ourselves to one of the most influential businesses in Fort Wayne regarding community affairs and Fort Wayne development. We are pursuing possibilities in partnering with Parkview.
Education & Training
Don Glick, Javier Mondragon, and Zis Milentis all attended the Fort Wayne site presenting The Global Leadership Summit at the Grand Wayne Center. This event is held in Chicago and is relayed via satellite. Speakers are notable leaders such as General Colin Powell, Carly Fiorina, Jim Collins, and Andy Stanley.
Dreams Come True
Bridge of Grace’s Board vision for the future includes a component of offering Life Skills Classes. On September 9, two eight-week programs were launched. The first is an ESL (English Second Language) Class. There are 16 students attending. The instructor is Patricia Cordero. The second class is a Parenting Skills development program. Sarah Adams, director of Educational Ministries for Associated Churches, is our instructor. This is a joint project with Associated Churches. This will also be a pilot project for them from the faith-based perspective, and they were very excited to see it launched.
